Standardized examination is routine in United States. In high schools, students need to take Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) to apply to colleges. After graduating from college, students need to take examination to apply to graduate school. Most graduate programs requires Graduate Record Exam (GRE). And, professional school requires specialized exams. Medical school requires Medical Collage Application Test, Dental school requires Dental Admission Test (DAT), and Law school requires Law School Admission Test (LSAT). There are alot more examinations for licensing. Kaplan is helping students prepare for all the examinations. It has many centers and offer live lecture classes and video lectures for some exams. It's making billions.
Problem: There are so many examination in United States. Getting high score is important for getting into schools and getting license.
Idea/Solution: Teaching centers + Live lectures + Video lectures + Great teachers + Standard preparation + Convenience

Hi Martin - It sounds interesting. So would studying with Kaplan actually cost less than going down the conventional route?
Does it enable students to do most of their studying at home?
In America, there are many standardized exams. Some exams are for applying to colleges and graduate schools, while others are for getting license to practice as a professional. SAT is to apply to college. MCAT (Medical School Admission Test) is for applying to medical schools. USMLE (United States Medical Licensure Exam) is for practicing as a doctor. Kaplan mainly helps students prepare for these exams. It does not help student in term of the regular schooling (elementary school, middle school, high school, or college). Kaplan is not a replacement for regular school.
